Cotton is a natural fiber. As such, it is renewable, biodegradable, and can be produced organically. It is very versatile and can be used to make many different fabrics, each with unique properties. Additionally, cotton can be blended with synthetic fibers, such as polyester, combining the desired properties of both materials.
Cotton fabrics are breathable, absorbent, and strong. They are used in the production of clothing and outdoor gear, but they are not naturally hydrophobic.

Cotton items may absorb water simply because they are dirty. First, try cleaning the items with Nikwax Tech Wash®, and if they are fairly new or have recently been reproofed, cleaning alone may be enough to enhance lasting hydrophobicity (DWR). But if the items have been heavily used, they should be reproofed by adding a DWR coating using Nikwax Cotton Proof™ after cleaning them with Nikwax Tech Wash®.

Nikwax Cotton Proof™ has been specially designed and optimized for breathable cotton, cotton-polyester blends, and canvas; it leaves a flexible hydrophobic layer on individual fibers, allowing moisture vapors to escape, maintaining breathability, extending the life of the gear, and optimizing its performance in rainy weather.
Nikwax Cotton Proof™ is easy and quick to apply during washing in the washing machine, and applying the product during washing ensures that it will penetrate the fabric. Lasting hydrophobicity (DWR) is developed during air drying, and because there is no need to tumble dry the clothing, energy is saved.

For best results, wash the items separately with Nikwax Tech Wash® before proofing. The proof can be applied to damp items; there is no need to dry them before proofing. Shake well before use. Follow the instructions on the label.
