Waterproof breathable footwear is likely to sweat and become damp inside when used in moist conditions. If the outer layer or leather absorbs water, it may limit the footwear's breathability. Therefore, to ensure comfort, it is necessary to maintain the footwear's durable water repellent (DWR) layer. This layer will wear off over time and will need to be renewed using Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof™.

If you are active and wear shoes, moisture-wicking socks will keep your feet dry. However, if the footwear absorbs water and gets wet, its breathability will be reduced. The moisture will not be able to escape through the material, causing sticky and damp feet. Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof™ renews the durable water repellent (DWR) layer, preventing water absorption while maintaining breathability, ensuring dry and comfortable feet.

Footwear may absorb water simply because it is dirty. Try cleaning the shoes with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™ first. If the shoes are relatively new or have recently been re-impregnated, cleaning alone may be enough to renew the durable water repellent (DWR) layer. But if the footwear is already worn, the DWR needs to be renewed using Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof™ after cleaning with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™.

Alternative impregnation products are often solvent-based aerosols. Other products may be water-based and contain fluorocarbon hydrocarbons. Aerosol products are flammable. Fluorocarbon hydrocarbons pose a potential threat to the environment and, in the long run, to users' health. Solvent-based products must also be applied to dry fabrics.
