Engine oil, after passing through lubricated components, flows back to the sump carrying external contaminants and those generated during engine operation. Its reintroduction into circulation without prior cleaning would increase mechanical wear due to the abrasive action of solid particles. To prevent such engine damage, an oil filter is used - a lubrication system component that captures contaminants smaller than 15-20 μm. The filter should be replaced every approximately 20,000 kilometers or once a year, which usually coincides with the oil change.
