The 2.0L Hurricane engine with direct injection and turbocharging found in the 2018-2023 Jeep Wrangler JL is the most advanced engine ever installed in a Wrangler. But despite all the advanced technological features that make the Hurricane great, it is still susceptible to a very technologically advanced problem: blow-by.
Fuel savings and increased power of direct fuel injection come with the risk of carbon buildup. When fuel and air are compressed in the cylinder, some of the mixture leaks past the piston rings and carries oil from the cylinder walls. This mixture is known as blow-by. To prevent an increase in crankcase pressure, blow-by is then vented into the intake system for re-burning. Blow-by becomes a problem in direct fuel injection engines when it passes the intake valves. Without fuel spray over the valve, there is nothing to wash away the blow-by and heat from combustion, ultimately causing it to accumulate as carbon behind the intake valves. This carbon buildup prevents the valves from fully closing and disrupts airflow. The result is poor engine performance, misfires, and in prolonged cases, engine damage.
The best solution to the blow-by problem is to completely prevent its formation. Instead of allowing blow-by to reach the intake system, the Mishimoto 2018-2023 Jeep Wrangler JL 2.0L kit with direct mounting and baffles diverts it away from the intake valves to a 7.5-ounce capacity can. The contents of the can can then be recycled at the next oil change. The internal air diverters and baffle in our can effectively condense
